Sheer Organza Ribbons and Organza Fabric Rolls
What is Organza?
Organza is a fine and transparent fabric, traditionally made from silk threads, though nowadays, it’s most commonly produced from polyester or nylon.
The most luxurious and high-quality organza available on the market is, of course, made of silk. Some of the most renowned countries for organza production are India, China, France, and Italy.
This ethereal and delicate organza silk material is preferred for wedding gowns, prom and evening dresses, as well as for making curtains and classy decorations.
Organza fabrics are also used in high-end flower boutiques for creating bouquets, complemented by the addition of charming organza ribbons for a delightful finishing touch.
History of Organza
The term "organza" is related to the word "organzine," which nowadays refers to any type of silk thread made by the traditional twisting method.
Like most silk fabrics, organza appeared after the "Silk Road," an ancient network of trade routes that stretched from China to Europe.
For centuries, organza has been used in the West as a material for evening, wedding, and other types of clothing where the desired effect is a light and semi-transparent fabric.
Organza Fabric Material and Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process used for producing this type of fabric varies depending on the material from which the organza is made. For instance, if it’s made from polyester, it needs to be synthesized in a special laboratory from entirely inorganic components. The process of producing polyester involves refining petroleum oil into textile yarn, and this process uses various machines and chemicals.
However, silk organza production is a purely organic process that doesn’t use any synthetic chemicals. This material is harvested from silk worms that naturally produce silk cocoons. These cocoons are then boiled or soaked in hot water and then "reeled" or unraveled to turn them into strands of fibers.
The production process for organza becomes uniform once the textile yarn is produced. Whether using silk or synthetic fibers, the next step in making organzine involves twisting two fibers in opposite directions.
When these fibers are then brought together, they naturally stick to one another due to the opposite kinetic forces.
Before the resulting yarn becomes fabric, it is boiled and treated with acid, which increases its strength. This stiffness is one of the main distinguishing factors that sets organza apart from other silk fabrics.
This acid treatment process is not necessary for polyester or nylon fibers, as they are comparatively stiff already.
Application and Purpose
Beyond its well-known use in wedding gowns and attire, organza fabrics can also be found in evening dresses, often accentuating edges and elaborate folds.
Organza can also be used in the creation of stage costumes, commonly in underskirts and special dance garments such as tutus. Beyond the world of clothing, this type of fabric can be used for making curtains, lampshades, or other forms of interior decor.
All organza ribbons have a wide range of applications and purposes. They are very delicate and airy. Their use extends beyond formal attire to gift wrapping and decorations, bouquets, as a subtle and refined accent in scrapbook decorations or binding scrapbook albums and photo albums, notebooks, organizers, mixed media projects, and even for making unconventional jewelry.
On EM ART online store, you will find a wide variety of organza fabric rolls and organza ribbons for decoration available not only in various colors and sizes but also in a variety of packaging options!
Types of Organza Fabrics
- Classic Organza – originally made from silk, this type of organza is now more commonly made from polyester or nylon
- Shiny or Mirror Organza – named for the shiny threads incorporated into its weave. Usually made from polyester, it’s the most reflective form of organza, as it reflects light very well;
- Crystal Organza – the most common and popular type of organza. It is soft, lightweight, and has a subtle shine. Made from silk or polyester, it is used for bridal gowns, home decor, and more.
- Pearl Organza – as the name suggests, this organza has a pearlescent color and shine, resembling a real pearl
- Crushed Organza – intentionally wrinkled during production to have a crinkled appearance
Specific Characteristics of Organza Fabric
- Transparency – small holes form during the weaving of the fabric, making organza transparent. It’s believed that the more holes per centimeter of fabric, the higher the quality
- Fineness – the material is extremely thin and delicate, as the threads are twisted very tightly
- Etherealness – this fabric manages to capture light and reflects sun rays incredibly. This effect is due to the quality of the material and all the twists;
- Strength – due to the acid treatment of the threads before weaving, organza is slightly stiff
- Breathable – organza is quite airy and breathable, as all the holes in the weave easily allow air to pass through
- Easily Wrinkled – because it is so thin and delicate, it wrinkles quite easily
