Nylon Jewelry Wire for DIY Projects

Nylon wire has one important feature and it is transparency. Thanks to it, you can use it to cut transparent beads of glass, semi-precious stone or plastic. It’s also so sturdy and durable that you don’t have to worry about it scratching the beads of some beads. Another staple is the stiffness, which allows you to thread the beads directly without using a needle. This is especially great when strung with glass beads (bruises). Clear Elastic Jewelry Cord - The Foundation of Your Jewelry

Jewelry cord has one distinctive feature: its transparency. When working with transparent cord, you can easily use glass beads, semi-precious stones, or plastic.

The durability of our cord ensures protection against scratches from the sharp edges of some beads. You can string the beads directly, without a needle. This is especially convenient when stringing small glass beads (seed beads).

The invisible cord is clear and transparent and can withstand weight. It is very effective for making bracelets and necklaces, where the beads appear to “levitate” around the body, as the thread is not noticeable. Traditionally, it is used with pearls, but with various sizes of magical beads and the help of simple optical illusions, you can create a very impressive “magical” necklace.

Let’s String a Bracelet with Beaded Flowers

Making jewelry with floral motifs is becoming increasingly popular. On EM ART, you will find a variety of themed beads for your unique jewelry. If you want to make something simple yet distinct, here is our floral themes jewelry idea.

Take 5 beads of your chosen color and string them onto a cord using a needle. Pass the needle through the five beads again, and secure the cord. Pass the needle through the first bead, then string a bead of a different color, count to the fourth bead, and pass the needle through it from right to left. Tighten well to shape your flower.

Bead and Cord Techniques - Peyote Stitch and What Can We Make with It?

Peyote Stitch and its variations offer incredible possibilities for making jewelry. Its roots can be traced back to ancient Egyptian civilization. Even today, as in the past, this stitch is used for making jewelry, decorating household items, and even in some forms of modern art.

History

No one can say exactly who invented the Peyote Stitch. Although dated to the time of Ancient Egypt, the name “Peyote” was passed down from the Native Americans, as their art popularized the stitch in the modern world.

The word “Peyote” is actually the name of a small cactus found in the southwestern parts of the USA and Mexico. Because of its hallucinogenic properties, the local Native American shamans used it as a pain reliever and antibacterial agent.

Cacti, beads... do you see the connection?

You may have heard about the traditional love of Native Americans for beads or even the popular legend that Dutch settlers bought Manhattan from the local population for a bag of shiny glass beads.

Beads are an integral part of Native American art—they used them to create and decorate household items, clothing, and jewelry. Using the “Peyote Stitch,” they decorated items used in religious rituals related to the Peyote cactus. That’s why the stitch was named after it.

Variations and Technique

There are several variations of the stitch. The basic stitch involves flat stringing of an even or odd number of beads, with the odd number having some peculiarities when “turning” the row. Using the flat stitch, you can make different types of jewelry and jewelry elements, as well as various decorations and household items.

Materials Needed

  1.  Beading needle - stringing and weaving the beads is done with special needles. These needles are very fine, made of flexible metal and have an elongated eye, so they can pass through the bead holes multiple times.
  2.  Beads - the idea of the stitch is to be smooth and flexible, so most often seed beads are used. The quality of the beads is essential for the final result. The beads have to be side by side in a zipper pattern, and if the shape and size are irregular, the effect will be lost.
  3.  Beading thread - nowadays, there are many different types of beading threads with various characteristics on the market. We offer high-quality clear transparent cord that can withstand a lot of weight.
  4.  Pattern - depending on the design, you can work without a pattern. For more complex designs, use a pattern to guide you for the number and color of the beads.

Interesting Facts

By decreasing and increasing the number of beads in different rows, you can shape your stitch in different ways—like a leaf, flower, or even an animal. With the help of the flat Peyote Stitch, you can also create many dimensional designs, as well as some types of beaded beads (for some, however, you need to master other variations of the stitch—such as circular beading).

Peyote Stitch with 2, 3, or more beads - it’s debatable whether it’s faster to bead than the basic version (especially if you’re a beginner), but the main goal of this variation is more accurate and smooth depiction of round geometric shapes or other rounded motifs.

Circular Peyote Stitch is used for beading cords and dimensional bead elements. With its help, you can bead chains for your cabochons or pendants, impressive bracelets, and even eyeglass chains and bag handles. It can also be beaded with an even or odd number of beads.

Free beading - without a pattern or motif, just as your imagination tells you—this way, true works of art can be created.

Peyote Stitch is often underestimated in terms of complexity, mainly because standard flat beading is extremely easy. However, the variations require a bit more effort... and a bit more math.

The stitch is also underestimated in another aspect—many people consider it boring and ordinary, but it offers many different applications. If you start gradually and learn all the variations one by one, you will surely be able to create incredible jewelry with just a handful of beads.
