Lace Ribbons
What is Lace?
Lace is a delicate fabric usually made from yarn or thread in an open web-like pattern. It can be made by machine or by hand.
Originally, linen, silk, gold, or silver threads were used to make decorative lace. Now it is often made with cotton thread, although linen and silk are still available. Mass-produced lace may be made from synthetic fibers. Some modern artists create lace with fine copper or silver wire instead of thread.
The word "lace" itself comes from Middle English, from Old French "las", meaning noose, string, from Latin "laqueus", loop; presumably, the connection with lace is to ensnare or fasten.
Application and Purpose
Lace is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, delicate, and elegant materials you can include in your projects, and you certainly won’t go wrong, with the result being more than stunning.
Its applications are endless and completely unique and original. Using lace ribbons and fabrics, you can create interesting decorative ornaments, creating delicate and gentle accents in invitations, cards, scrapbook albums, photo albums, frames, etc.
Other ways to incorporate lace trims into your projects include using it in jewelry making, adding it as decoration in flower arrangements, enhancing gift wrapping for a more luxurious touch, and creating thematic decorations for weddings, balls, celebrations, and other special occasions.
For decorating various items at home, you should also consider using lace. It can refresh an old and boring garment, add a beautiful touch to placemats or glasses for an authentic and vintage style, and even be used in creating hair accessories for a charming look.
Types of Lace
There are many different types of lace, varying according to:
- Method of weaving: bobbin lace, needle lace, tape lace, Irish crochet lace, and various machine variations.
- Origin: French, Brussels, Neapolitan, Florentine, Senegalese (an imitation of Venetian lace), and even Kalofer lace. Almost every country has its own type and pattern of lace, making it so diverse and colorful.
Here are some of the most popular types of lace:
- Bobbin lace – This type of lace is made with bobbins and a pillow. The bobbins, made of wood, bone, or plastic, hold threads that are woven together and held in place with pins stuck into the pattern on the pillow. The pillow contains straw, preferably oat straw or other materials like wood shavings, insulating styrofoam, or ethafoam.
- Chemical lace – Characteristic of this type of lace is that the sewing area is stitched with embroidery threads that form a continuous motif. Then the areas for seams are removed, leaving only the embroidery. The ground for seams is made from water-soluble or heat-resistant material.
- Crocheted lace - This includes Irish crochet done with a hook.
- Alençon lace – This type of lace is primarily produced in Normandy and holds a dignified place in UNESCO. It uses the finest and most net-like fabric. On hexagonal cells, a colored pattern is manually applied, whose edge is fixed with horsehair. It is considered a complex process. It takes about five hours to produce one square centimeter of fabric. Despite the mechanization of production, handwork is highly valued.
- Irish lace – This is one of the most beautiful types of lace for creating garments. At the first stage, individual elements (petals, leaflets) are crocheted, then connected with a hook into one fabric. Minimal skills are sufficient to master the weaving of Irish lace.
- Chantilly lace - Black lace refers to the classic type of bobbin lace. The technique is used for decorating shawls and drapery. This type of lace has always been sought after among crowned ladies.
- Machine-made lace – This is any type of lace created with mechanical means.
- Richelieu lace - This type of lace has Italian origins, as suggested by its name. Its fantastic patterns are located on thin fabric (cambric, muslin, organza, net) with various deep stitching.
- Brussels lace, originating from Belgium, is known for its delicate floral motifs and intricate designs created through a combination of bobbin and needle lace techniques. Highly valued for its fine craftsmanship, Brussels lace is a popular choice for elegant garments and decorative items, showcasing meticulous handwork and exquisite detailing.
- Kalofer bobbin lace – Kalofer bobbin lace, inspired by Brussels lace, incorporates elements reflecting Bulgaria’s nature such as sunflowers, roses, edelweiss, grain stalks, and animals, showcasing a distinctive Bulgarian aesthetic.
History of Lace
The origin of lace is a topic of debate among historians due to its development in various techniques unique to different regions. This diversity makes it challenging to attribute lace’s origin to a single place definitively.
Lace was used by the clergy of the early Catholic Church as part of the vestments in religious ceremonies, but it did not enter the northwestern part of the European continent until the 16th century. In 1840, British Queen Victoria got married in a dress made of lace fabrics, influencing the style of wedding dresses to this day.
