How to make an epoxy resin ashtray
Epoxy resin is a material with which you can make various objects for the decoration of your home. In this video, we’ll show you how to do just that.
Acrylic Varnishes
Acrylic varnish is an acrylic resin in a water dispersion. Its milky white color changes during drying, turning into an elastic transparent film with a glossy effect.
Another very useful product is the professional medium, which will allow easy regulation of the state of the acrylic paint, such as thickness, consistency, or flow.
In addition to acrylic varnishes, you will find many other additives for acrylic and decoupage in our stores, such as: resin dyes in the form of fine glitter or powder, spray fixatives for pencils, pastels, or graphite, decoupage glue-varnish, aerosol acrylic varnishes, solvent yacht varnishes, two-component varnishes, acrylic retarders, chalk, polymer clay softeners, thinners, hand sanitizing gels, and many more.
Usage Instructions
To protect your work created with acrylic paints from dust, UV rays, and other external influences, it is recommended to cover it with acrylic varnish. All acrylic varnishes are flexible and reversible, and there are even acrylic products for 100% removal of already applied paints and varnishes.
Another great advantage of acrylic varnishes is that they increase the durability of the paintings, creating a flat and even coating, which in turn increases transparency and improves paint adhesion.
Acrylic varnishes are non-toxic, can be diluted with water, and after use, the brush can be cleaned with ordinary soap.
Types of Acrylic Varnishes
There are several types of acrylic varnishes such as: satin, gloss, or matte. The glossy one will make the colors brighter and more prominent, which is why it is the most preferred.
Satin and matte varnishes will create much less glare but will soften the colors. Matte varnish will lighten darker colors. Satin is somewhere between matte and gloss.
For your convenience, you can easily mix glossy, satin, or matte varnishes to achieve your desired finish or apply them on top of each other to change the appearance of the final varnish.
Acrylic Paints and Varnishing an Acrylic Painting
Acrylic paints are known to be among the most popular in the world because they can be used directly from the tubes or diluted with water to create a lighter and more watercolor-like version.
Although they are easy to use, beginners may encounter some difficulties. However, the great thing about acrylic paints is that they are incredibly easy to learn, and you can quickly become an expert in their use.
When using acrylic paints, it is important to follow these few tips:
- Keep the acrylic flexible;
- Clean your brushes regularly;
- Paint on acrylic washes;
- Mix colors very quickly;
- Create sharp edges;
It is recommended, when trying a new type of varnish, to first perform a small test on a small piece of canvas or painted wood to ensure you like the final result. This is especially necessary if you are adding an isolation coat, as it and the varnish can easily change the final appearance of the painting. To test the isolation coat and varnish, first apply them to a small painting with colors similar to the actual painting.
Place the painting horizontally while varnishing and afterward while it dries. If you varnish it while it is hanging on the wall, you risk the varnish running down the canvas and dripping all over the floor.
There is always a chance that the varnish will start running down the sides of the painting, and once it dries, it may stick to the surface. Therefore, it is good to place a wooden board or another support under the painting before you start varnishing.
Dip your brush into the varnish, then carefully tap off the excess varnish. Hold the brush at an angle and apply the product with light and even strokes, moving the brush in the same direction.
When you are finished, look at the surface of the painting from an angle. If there are parts that are not shiny and wet, carefully add a bit more varnish.
Let it dry for several hours, according to the time indicated on the package. Sometimes the varnish does not cover completely evenly the first time, so if desired, you can repeat the process.
After finishing, thoroughly clean the brush and store it in a safe place where there is no dust.
