Kumihimo Bracelet

This is a Japanese textile technique for braiding cords (kumi – braid, intertwine, weave; and himo – cord, string, suede, etc.) During the Middle Ages – 1185-1614, with the increase of samurai warriors, the need for Kumihimo also increased.

The cords were used for every uniform, for wrapping the handles of swords, for securing the harness, as accessories in tea ceremonies, for tying earrings, and more. These braided cords came in many shapes, with different structures, designs, and thicknesses.

Later, the braids spread as a decorative element for clothing, ropes for attaching samurai weapons, and for girding knives. When samurai schools were closed at the end of the nineteenth century, the focus of Kumihimo shifted to fashion.

Kumihimo is used as an obi-jime – a cord that “secures” the fabric belt of a kimono. This fashion created an alternative to the braids used on swords and helmets and became the main purpose of Kumihimo.

Today, this technique is mainly used for colorful decoration. For making cylindrical braids, a round Kumihimo disc is used, and for flat braids – a square one.

 

Required Materials:

1. Sturdy cardboard
2. One compact disc
3. Scissors

How to Make It?

1. Trace a circle with the disc – make an inner and outer circle in the middle
2. Divide the disc first into 4 equal parts, then into 32 equal parts
3. Cut out the circle from the cardboard, as well as the inner circle made in the middle, and cut the 32 equal parts to the end of each short line
4. Prepare the pattern that will be woven to create the desired design. At the bottom of our article, you will see a sheet with different patterns. The one we’re making today is the second from the left to the right. But we also drew our design on the white sheet in the bottom photo – this is the arrangement of the threads on the disc – 3 of one color and 5 of the other.
5. For a normal-sized bracelet, cut between 80 and 100 cm of the material for weaving. 
6. Tie the ends of the eight threads in a knot and pass them through the middle hole. Insert a bobby pin through the knot to give the bracelet some weight and hang it from the bottom side of the disc.
7. Start weaving.
8. Take the bottom left thread and move it to the first free notch on the opposite side, to the left of the top threads.
9. The right top thread is moved to the first free notch on the opposite side, to the right. Rotate the entire disc clockwise by 90°, and the next two pairs of threads become the working ones.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 until you get the desired length of the bracelet. Don’t worry if you forget which pair of threads you reached in the weaving process. Take one of the pairs of threads forming the letter “V,” not the parallel ones.
11. Detach the loose ends from the disc and tie a knot on the second end.
12. With a short thread, tie the two ends of the bracelet, and your Kumihimo bracelet is ready.
