What is the Decoupage Technique?
With the decoupage technique you can transform any item into something new. It originated as an applied decoration technique in 12th century China and spread widely across Europe during the Middle Ages. Over the past 20 years, the decoupage technique has regained popularity as one of the most popular and accessible ways to decorate.
The word “decoupage” comes from French, meaning "to cut out," or in other words, creating a collage or paper application. With this technique, you can decorate objects using scraps or cutouts from paper. The cut-out images from paper or napkins can then be applied to furniture, accessories, and other household items.
The decoupage technique can be applied to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, ceramics, thick cardboard, and more.
How to Create Decoupage with Napkins?
Materials may include paper illustrations (cutouts from books, magazines, etc.), napkins, as well as fabric elements like lace, ribbons, pressed flowers, and more.
Make sure that the decorative motifs are carefully cut out and that colors and patterns are well-matched to achieve a finished look.
Most paper napkins are multi-layered and folded, allowing you to unfold and use the entire napkin for decoration. If the object is large enough, you can use the entire napkin. Otherwise, cut out the motifs you wish to use.
Required Materials
- An object to decorate.
- White acrylic paint and clear acrylic lacquer.
- Glue (C200 or decoupage glue).
- Scissors.
- Napkins for decoupage.
- Imagination and creativity.
- Choose the object to decorate: a vase, wooden box, cabinet, wardrobe, cup, or anything else. Once selected, carefully clean the object inside and out with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.
If the object is a dark color, it is advisable to paint it with white acrylic paint before starting. Apply two coats to ensure the later appliqués and napkins stand out better with bright and fresh colors.
If the object is light or white, painting with acrylic paint is optional, and you can proceed directly with the decoupage technique.
- Once the paint is dry, select and prepare the appliqués to be glued. Cut out all the desired motifs from the napkin using scissors. If the napkin is double- or triple-layered, remove the excess layers.
- Once you’ve chosen and cut out your designs, decide where to place them. Prepare a suitable brush and decoupage glue.
Place the napkin on the object and gently apply glue, brushing from the center outward to remove any air bubbles. Be careful not to tear the napkin.
- After the decoration is glued, let it dry completely. Once dry, smooth the edges of the glued napkins with a small sponge for a perfect finish.
- The final step in the decoupage technique is to coat the object with clear acrylic lacquer.
Why Use Decoupage for Decoration?
- The materials needed for the decoupage technique are affordable and accessible.
- The technique is simple and doesn’t require special knowledge or skills to achieve impressive results.
- With this technique, you can easily transform an old object into something new and beautiful.
Decoupage with napkins is a unique technique for creating beautiful works of art, refreshing your home décor, or making unique and special gifts for your loved ones.
Types of Decoupage Techniques
In addition to the basic decoupage method, other techniques include:
- Partial Decoupage – This method is used when you want to apply only a single element from the entire napkin illustration, such as a flower or heart. Simply cut out the desired element and stick it onto the object.
- Reverse Decoupage – This is commonly used for decorating glass objects. The elements are glued in reverse so they can be viewed through the transparent object, cup, or plate while keeping it functional.
- Full Decoupage – This technique involves covering the entire surface of the object, with napkins glued tightly together, ensuring motifs overlap and fully cover the decorated surface.
